What I Wish I Knew in My First Year of Photography Business

May 23, 20253 min read

Let’s rewind the clock.

It’s my first year as a photographer. I’m bursting with creativity, juggling a camera manual in one hand and a coffee in the other, trying to figure out how the heck to shoot in manual mode, book clients, and edit galleries at lightning speed — all while wondering if I’m actually cut out for this.

Sound familiar?

If you’re in your first year of running your photography business — or even your fifth and still feeling like you’re winging it — I see you. And I want to share some things I wish someone had told me back then.

These lessons would’ve saved me a heap of time, money, and late-night comparison spirals. So here we go...

1. You Don’t Need to Be “Better” to Be Booked

I wasted months (okay, years) thinking I had to perfect my editing, my posing, and my gear before I was worthy of charging decent prices.

Truth bomb? Clients don’t book you because you're technically flawless. They book you because of how you make them feel.
What changed everything? Learning to own my style, lean into my strengths, and stop obsessing over what other photographers were doing.

If you’re still stuck in the comparison trap, you need support that gets you off the hamster wheel and into confident action. That’s exactly why I created the Newborn Photography Business Blueprint.

2. Systems Will Save Your Sanity

I thought automation was for “big businesses” — but once I discovered workflows, canned emails, and booking systems that worked while I slept… everything changed.

You shouldn’t be buried in your inbox or sending the same message over and over again. That time? It’s better spent shooting, creating, and being present with your family.

Want to swipe my exact systems? They’re all included in the NPBB, from client onboarding to email templates.

3. Pricing Isn’t About Confidence — It’s About Sustainability

I started with prices that barely covered my petrol and coffee. I told myself, “Once I feel confident enough, I’ll charge more.”

But confidence doesn’t pay your bills. Strategy does.

If your pricing doesn’t reflect the time, energy, and value you bring — burnout is around the corner.

In the NPBB, I walk you through how to set profitable pricing that your dream clients will say YES to.

4. Consistency Beats Perfection

I obsessed over having the perfect Instagram grid, the perfect logo, the perfect client experience… and delayed launching, posting, and promoting as a result.

But showing up consistently — imperfectly — is what actually grew my business. Progress trumps perfection every single time.

5. You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

I tried to do everything solo. DIY everything. Learn through trial and (a lot of) error.

But once I started investing in education, coaching, and courses that actually spoke to where I was at — I fast-tracked my growth, booked dream clients, and stopped second-guessing everything.

You don’t have to “earn” support. You just have to decide that you’re ready to grow.
And if you’re ready — I’m here for you.

Final Thoughts

The first year is a wild ride — full of self-doubt, wins, learning curves, and magic.

But you don’t have to make it harder than it needs to be.

If you’re reading this and nodding along, then this is your sign to stop guessing your way through this.

Let’s build a business you love waking up to. One that works for your life, and one that makes you proud.
